Maurice McAuliffe c1837 Father Darby
« on: Saturday 25 August 18 14:30 BST (UK) »
Hello There,

I do hope someone can help.

On the 1861 marriage certificate of my 3 x Grandparents, Maurice is 24 years old, and states that his father is Darby McAuliffe,a farm labourer. His bride was Catherine Stack, whose family I have managed to trace back another generation (from Cork )

I have not been so lucky with Maurice. All he states on the ( English ) census, is that he was born in Ireland.

I understand ,that in some parts of Ireland the name Darby and Jeremiah are intertwined . I cannot find a baptism for my ancestor on Rootsireland for which I have a subscription. Is there another site I can use ? I would love to find Maurice's mother, and go back at least one more generation.

I do not know how relevant it is, but on at least two census, the family are using the name Gould. It is definitely my family. All their children were born with the name McAuliffe, or variations thereof, but are using the surname Gould(in North Ormesby )

Any help,or advice gratefully received.

RootsIreland does not have records for all area, and only about half of county Cork. If catholic try IrishGenealogy website or National Library if you know the area he was born

Thank You Hallmark,

For your response. I am still perusing your links, as I am a little unsure how to navigate the site , but I will get there.

I have just looked back at my notes etc,and found that on the 1881 English census ,69,Hymer Street , Ormesby, Middlesborough, my Maurice, mistranscribed as Horace (Gould ) states he was born in Limerick c1831.

His wife Catherine Stack, was baptised May 5th 1839 at Newmarket, Co. Cork. Her father was John, and her mother was Johanna Collins. I have  been fortunate, and found their marriage, and both their baptisms.I also have been able to trace their other children.

But as for Morris / Maurice!

Maurice and Catherine had the following children:-

Johanna 1862
Mary 1864
Ellen 1865 ( My great great Gran )
John 1868
Catherine 1872
Maurice 1874
Bridget 1878
William 1880

John and Johanna will have been named for Catherine's parents, Maurice and Catherine after themselves

I will now look at the Darby/Jeremiah McAuliffe deaths on the link you gave me, and see if I can work out anything. I figure he would have been born c 1808.

Thank You once again
