To write off the Dharwar entry....

It reads Edward Hunter and Ellen A Hunter both 27 and from Lancashire.
Possibly Edward Hunter and Ellen Alice Isherwood who married in Preston Lancs in 1880.
His occupation was brickmaker.

This WAS Ellen Alice Isherwood who married Edward Hunter. He died soon afterwards and she married my GtGt uncle so not your man.

Edward Couchman HUNTER, b. 1853 in London ran off to Addington, Durban, Natal, and re-married bigamously in 1898. His new wife died in 1901. He spent a week in the Camden workhouse in 1909. Thereafter, he may have to-and-fro'd to Natal (various Passenger Lists may feature the same ECH), but there is no further trace any country. He was known as Edward Couchman and was an upholsterer from a wealthy family.
Where could he have ended up (a consultant in S Africa could find no further records)? Maybe someone has a clue?

Thank you for responding. Yes, he had five children, one of whom (Wilfrid) put him in the workhouse, but ECH was not in any 1911 census, even with the son Wilfrid.

Married Ellen Blanche Houghton on 28.9.1875 - his 22nd birthday

Thank you for the response and information. Frustratingly, I have chapter-and-verse on him but cannot trace his death either in South Africa (which seemed to be a favourite location) or back home. He was a silly boy; at the time of his re-marriage, his father died (1898), leaving £4m to his grandchildren and others - but nothing to his wayward son. Interestingly, I have letters written (in 1973) by my parents saying "he ran off with a barmaid to Seychelles or Mauritius"; perhaps they did not know he ended up in Natal.

I think I have found your Edward Couchman Hunter. He changed his name to Charles Edward Couchman b 1852 in England and died 28/6/1935 aged 83 in Durban South Africa. He had a son with the same name.
