Your discovery is absolutely fascinating. Thank you for the efforts in locating this death certificate. Clearly, I need to plug into Ancestry to see if there is evidence to support the possibility that he changed his name etc. Meanwhile, this has been quite a revelation!

You welcome. I just typed Couchman as his surname in the South African National Archives and looked to see what came up. Strange the person you hired could not find it.

Yes. I myself hadn't appreciated that ancestors did change their names - for all sorts of reasons. It looks like I have some way to go to find the death details for Edward Couchman HUNTER, who may now be called Charles Edward COUCHMAN. Grrr.

Help sought from experienced Family Search users, please:

A long-standing brickwall was demolished, when a fellow researcher found the death information for my great-grandfather Edward Couchman HUNTER. He died in Durban in 1928, see link below:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91P-DQ8F-Z?cc=2721608&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A8LH1-SQN2

The problem is that I just cannot replicate this search on my own computer. I put in the (successful) data: Edward Couchman HUNTER, born in London 1853, death in Durban - and the result is always Zero. Is there a special technique with FS that I am missing?

I have just tried it putting in Couchman as the first name and Hunter as the surname. For location I just put South Africa and up it popped.

Strange. No result using this input field (which I often use):
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/igi

But, using this field, up it pops indeed !:

Thank you for shining a light. Any further guidance will be appreciated.

hello, I appreciate this is quite an old thread, but thought I'd throw my hat into the ring, as Edward Couchman Hunter is my gg grandfather. My grandmother told me my actual surname was hyphenated, Couchman-hunter, but not much detail on why, as my grandfather, her first husband, Major Leonard Hunter was killed in WW2 and she had later remarried. Consequently I didn't know much about my Hunter ancestry. Edward is a bit of a mystery, and I haven't yet come across anyone who knows more of what was his history. My mother told me he was a black sheep, and possibly a gambler. He shows up at 449 Oxford St in the 1871 census, was it one of his father's premises? Oxford St numbering was altered in 1882 and I can't find out what the equivalent building would have been afterwards.
