My Ancestors
« on: Saturday 25 August 18 17:09 BST (UK) »
I was  wondering if anyone could help me. My paternal great-grandfather is named James "Jim" West (born in 1922) and his wife (my great-grandmother) was called Dorothy Maddra (born in 1931). My paternal grandfather recently told me that, on James' side of the family, either James' father or grandfather came from Italy and his surname was Pacitto. All of our family are from Yorkshire or Hull. I don't know the first name or anything else, I was wondering if anyone could help me?

A few questions-

Do you have the marriage certificate of Jim to Dorothy?
Do you have a birth certificate for Jim?
Do you know specifically where Jim was born?
Do you know the names of any of Jim's siblings?

Regards
Ayashi

Edit-

I couldn't see Jim on the 1939 Register, but I could see Dorothy (later WEST later CONNAH).

There is a marriage for Dorothy MADDRA to James L F WEST 2 qr 1851, Hull, Yorkshire (2a 541)

Further to this there is a possible birth:
James F L WEST 1922 Hull, Yorkshire, mother's maiden name WALTON (9d 510) (Note the switching of the middle initials).

Further edit-

There are indeed a couple of PACITTO families living in Hull on the 1939 Register, so there may be some truth in their involvement in your ancestry. Having a look at them now but I don't think I'm allowed to post information on the 1939 Register here because of copyright rules.

Hello Kim and welcome  :)

Ayashi has given you some questions to start your search.
We are not allowed to give details from 1939 register which might give more recent information but you can go back through some simple searches by using free sites.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk
https://www.familysearch.org

Marriage certificates and birth certificates are the best help but can be expensive.

Kim, as an aside, are you related to Errol WEST 1943-1990? I think he married a PACITTO who appears to be a later child of Pasqual Antonio PACITTO, who looks like he is the son of Gaetano PACITTO (Snr) who was born in Italy.

Possible marriage for James' parents

Marriages March quarter 1921
Florence E Walton   Hull    9d   637
James O West     Hull    9d   637

This looks like the only James O West birth

Births September quarter 1903
James Odell West   Tynemouth

so, not in Hull, so is James O West actually a Pacitto?

There is a published tree (with some photos) which has James O West as James Osborne West b Australia.

1901 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSZZ-D7Q

1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWZS-5DD

??? You would think that an Australian birth would be significant though in family lore.

I saw the marriage and the Aus James, didn't want to get too ahead of things without an OP reply.

It did occur to me that there might not be any paperwork for Pacitto, for all we know it might have been a NPE that has been conveyed to the OP.

I also wanted to confirm that the Errol mention wasn't a chance that the family story got a bit tangled. I've had that happen a few times.

I should perhaps mention for others that I did PM the OP with information on the PACITTO families that appear in 1939, hence my comment with Errol. It's entirely possible that one of those lads met up with one of OP's ladies. I'm not seeing an official crossover yet.

I posted the tree information because it does  name her ancestor - whether that is true, we will have to see.
Hopefully Kim will check back soon.
If it was me, I would be very keen to see if anyone has replied  :)
