john white
« on: Saturday 25 August 18 18:39 BST (UK) »
Wonder if anyone can help me please.Looking for the death of John White. He was born 1811.In the censuses he put his birthplace as Woolwich Kent or St.Giles in the fields. He married twice once to Selina Roberts in 1837 and after her death he married Sarah Beatty in 1860. He was alive in the 1881 census but in 1891 Sarah was a widow. As White is a very common name it is very hard to find the right John White.
thank you

1841 King St. St Giles in The Fields, Middlesex
John 30, Selina 25 Jno 3 Wm 3 months all born in the county

Selina Frances Roberts   14 May 1815   St Andrew Holborn   City of London
father William, Shoemaker

No clear baptism for John, too many possible, before 1813 generally only the parents were named, some parishes might enter some detail such as abode or fathers occupation, my guess he was born in the Holborn area.

Colin

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

thank you Ayashi and Colc for your help. Very much appreciated. Will have to buy a death cert I guess
do not understand why sometimes he puts his place of birth as woolwich and other tmes St.Giles in the fields. Unless he was born in Woolwich and was baptised in St,Giles? Anyway thanks for your time

I hope that this not confuse the issue too much but I have found the following:

John White born 31 Dec 1812 baptised 15 Jan 1813 Woolwich St Mary Magdalene Greenwich. Parents John & Patience. Father a Gunner of the Hindostar? Storeship.

Bearing in mind the period of time I think it may be possible, plus this John White is the only one to be born in Woolwich on the 1851/1861 censuses.

1861 – St Giles
Name   Age
John White    51   Shoemaker born Woolwich
William White    20   Children born M/sex
Thomas White    14
Louisa White    4

Now the problem with this is the marital status is not too clear, but it does bring into question the second marriage in 1860.

There is a death registration:
Name   Selina White
Death   07/1854 Holborn London

This could be the John you had in mind maybe but is it the right one?
Name   John White
Birth   abt 1813
Death   07/1883 Holborn London

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thanks ColC  for your info. What with the common name of John White and his Woolwich/St.Giles place of birth it is a bit confusing to say the least!.But I do know John [Woolwich] and John [St.Giles] are one of the same. I have the marriage Certificate for his marriage to Selina where he states his father's name as John White Shoemaker. Unfortunately G.R.O have lost the marriage cert. for his second marriage to Sarah Beattie so I cant get any info from that.

I think the death reg for John White in 1883 maybe the right one.as in 1881 he was living in Holborn
so I think I will chance it and order a death cert. Thanks again for your help.
