When you applied did you put both names in or just one?

I've had a look at the original image for the reference and to me it quite clearly says 1B 685, so not sure why the GRO can't find it.

ColC gave you the marriage details which I repeat here:-

Name:   Sarah Beattie
Gender:   Female
Marriage Date:   5 Nov 1860
Marriage Place:   Saint Mary Soho,Westminster,London,England
Spouse:   John White

You have the exact date and marriage place here.   You could contact the Westminster Registry Office and see if they have the marriage in their records.

Email registeroffice@westminster.gov.uk or call 020 7641 7500.

If they don't have the marriage record then no doubt they could tell you where you can obtain the certificate.  Make sure they know that the GRO say they don't have it.

As you have the exact date and place of the marriage, you could order a copy of the entry in the parish marriage register from Westminster Archives, instead of the civil certificate. The data given in the record will be identical. The cost for this is £5.00.

https://www.westminster.gov.uk/family-history
(scroll down to 11. Parish Registers - Requesting copies of parish registers)

(When you place the order, you may want to tell them this marriage register is not on FindMyPast, or they will just refer you there.)

Find My Past has the transcription but not the original image of the certificate.

Find My Past has the transcription but not the original image of the certificate.

The entry on FindMyPast is taken from FamilySearch's database (English Marriages, 1538-1973).

just want to say thank you all for helping me. Tried with G.R.O for wedding Cert. for John and Sarah and this time I had success! Also on this wedding cert he claims his father John is a Gunner in Woolwich Kent. which bears out with what Colc told me.

Anyway  thanks again for solving that mystery for me
