McConnell in Fermoy
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 15:12 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to track down Quentin McConnell of Fermoy, and particularly exactly when he died.

He was born on 4th March 1785 in Dailly, Ayrshire, Scotland, and moved to Ireland before 1813, when he was married in Cork.  He worked as a millwright, and there is a story that he was the proprietor of a "large ironworks" at Fermoy, but I suspect this is simply a much later piece of embroidery.

His son, born in Fermoy on 1st January 1815, was James Edward McConnell who was one of the founders of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1846.  He became quite well-known, but his father's details are elusive.  Quentin's death has been given as occurring in 1819 - or in 1821.

I'd be very grateful for any information - anything at all!  Or for hints about how to discover any details about him during his time in Ireland.

Harry.

I think he'd have been a Church of Scotland member (his family are buried in Dailly parish churchyard) and his son was Church of England when he lived in Buckinghamshire, so I'd guess he wasn't a Catholic.  C of I, perhaps?
