JAMES EDWARD McCONNELL was born on the 1st of January, 1815, at Fermoy, Co. Cork, where his father, Mr. Quentin McConnell, possessed a fairly prosperous business in large ironworks.

He was left fatherless at the age of four

Yes, hallmark, but where was this alleged "large ironworks"?  I've looked for it on old maps and in various books.  Quentin was a millwright, no family money so far as I can see, and I suspect the description of him having been the proprietor was probably a bit of an exaggeration.

His son, after he became wealthy, had a family tree drawn up which contains some real blarney - that ancestors fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie - very unlikely given their background in Ayrshire, and I could find no trace of any such thing among the family's records in the Scottish Record Office.  So maybe the "large ironworks" story came from the same source - perhaps someone telling James Edward McConnell what he wanted to hear.

Fascinating houses, hallmark!

I believe a plaque has been put up on the house in Fermoy where J. E. McConnell was born, but I haven't yet been to see it.

You may want to consider a 67 marker test at Family Tree DNA. Munster, Ireland has two very large haplogroups of testers (L226 and CTS4466). Each project has around 1,000 testers. L226 has one O'Connell tester in Kerry County:  Joannis Connyll - Tuosist, Kerry, Ireland
Casey - Tipperary or Clare, Ireland
Kelly - Ireland
Brooks, Bryan, Shelton (2), Harper, Williamson - England
Tucker, Arrington, Stevenson, Shears, Jarvis - England
