Quick question
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 18:59 BST (UK) »
Just been looking at a few census returns..and I noticed that my mother’s maiden name was crossed out and her married name written in. Then that married name was crossed out and her new married name written in. She is obviously just a child in this one..also the dates of her 2 marriages are in the left hand column.
Who would have don’t this and why? And what does the black stripe with record officially closed mean?
Lawton, Callender, Newton - County Durham, Northumberland
Pybus, Hodgson, Canada and Yorkshire -
Trenholm - Yorkshire, Canada
Mildenstein - Cuba, USA, Germany, Liverpool, London, Hull and UK

That is not a census record but the 1939 Register

The 1939 Register was updated with name changes; the black line blocks details of those born after 1917.

The image is not a census image but an image from the 1939 National Registration (1939) which is not a census of population but a record compiled to help with the production of identity cards ration books etc.

A census is a record of population on a set date in history, the 1939 was a record that was continually updated during its initial usage period and later up to 1992 when it was being used by the National Health Service.
The changes of name (and indeed addresses)  were required for identification purposes.
The redacted records (black lines) are records of persons believed to still be alive.

Cheers

Thank you so much Guy. I hadn’t heard of that register. I’ve looked up my parents before and hadn’t come across it, so I’m assuming it’s something that’s been released recently. It’s been a while since I was on ancestry.
Thank you again 😁

The Register was also used as a basis for details when the Nation Health was set up in 1948, it was updated right up until 1991, that is why you see  amendments to names made long after 1939.

COLE Gt. Oakley, & Lt. Oakley, Essex.
DUNCAN Kent

The NHS released the 1939 in 2010 Findmypast released it a few years later in November 2015 and Ancestry in May 2018.

If your parents a deceased you can get their records opened in two ways.
If you are a FindMyPast subscriber by sending a scan of the relevant death certificate to FindMyPast., this service is free.
Otherwise you can send a copy of the DC to the National Archives with the relevant fee (£23.35p).

Thank you. I already have those. I just came across this register today. I’ve not been on ancestry for about a year.
