James and William Brittle
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 19:01 BST (UK) »
Hope someone can help. I am trying to find the mothers name of James Brittle born Sedgley in 1855 and am hitting a bit of a wall.
His fathers name was William and his spouse Was Jane Marsh father Daniel. I cant find anything pertaining to Mother. I believe that Sedgley could be Staffordshire or possibly Worcestershire and am having a look myself but struggling.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

Hello,
GRO shows no mother’s maiden name so perhaps he was illegitimate.
Have you found him in censuses?

If his Mother married after his birth, then he may show on censuses (until his marriage) under his new 'father's' surname, and/or William may be an invented name.

Get his birth certificate for Mother's name?

Looking for Brittles in Sedgely in 1851 and whittling down names by age there is a Betsey Brittle born 1839 ( family name sometimes Brettle) living in Sedgley with parents Richard and Sarah. Richard is a Canal labourer ,
In 1861 Richard and Sarah are still living in Sedgely and they have a visitor Sarah Marsh aged 6.

Probably a coincidence

The mention of Flavell with Brittle is intriguing as my Gr Grandmother Sarah Ellen Brittle married John Flavell. So there is a family Brittle/Flavell thing going on

Thanks to you all for the help with the research

I have now got more questions than answers
Birth cert names Mother only as Ann Brittle

There is a marriage record where he cites William Brittle as father... I am now very confused as wht or where to go next.
