Illegitimate births in Rothesay 1870 & 1872
« on: Monday 27 August 18 14:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on the following illegitimate children, born in Rothesay to my ancestor:
Margaret Pritchard, born on 28 May 1870.
And twins Jessie and Jeanie Pritchard born on 20 August 1872.
Their mother was Janet Pritchard, who was from Coatbridge (born 1836). No father can be found in the Kirk session minutes.
Margaret Pritchard was in the Rothesay Industrial School in 1881. She died in Rothesay in 1894.
Jessie Pritchard (by then known as Janet) was in a poorhouse in Glasgow 1891, for two months, but was fetched by her mother and taken back to Rothesay.
The twins later married. Jeanie married William Faulds, and Jessie/Janet married Thomas Hamilton
Family anecdotal information is that the father was an aristocrat, so perhaps that is why it is close to impossible to find any information. Or perhaps the old family story is not true.
Can anyone please advise me where else I can look for the name of the father of the three girls? I would really like to complete that circle for them on their behalf.

If no father is named on their birth, marriage or death certs - then there is no way you will find out.

Have you considered you may be looking for 2 different fathers?

Where are Janet & Margaret in 1871?  1861 has Janet in Renfrewshire - born Old Monkland

The mother Janet is working as a servant in Rothesay, and the baby Margaret is boarding with a woman in Rothesay.
I agree, there may be two fathers involved.

Yes, thanks Carole. I have that information.
And I have their marriage records and death notices. No father/s mentioned.
I am hoping (probably against all hope!!) that there is some information to be found somewhere else.

No fathers named on any document so their mother took that secret to her grave

If you really want to know this pay site covers them

https://www.oldscottish.com/rothesay.html

Do the certificates on Scotlands people have RCE numbers on them, because then the father(s) might be mentioned on the back of the certificates.

So until we see what this site has who knows? If no names then you don't pay :)

If there is a RCE it will be attached to the birth entry on Scotlands People and is free to download with the birth entry
I checked Old Scotlands list and the 3 Pritchard girls are on it so s father must be recorded somewhere
