William Pain Brown born Deal, Kent
« on: Wednesday 10 August 05 09:31 BST (UK) »
I have William b 1765, married Judith Knight b 1783 in Sandwich in 1805 at St Leonards.   Looking for ancestors of either William or Judith.  Judith, widowed, is recorded as living with Stephen Pain and Elizabeth Brown (son and daughter-in-law?) in Dymchurch at the time of the 1841 census.  At the time of the 1851 census Judith is recorded as a nurse living at 60 Griffin St, Deal.

Don't have much on this William Pain Brown apart from the fact that he was a Trinity House Pilot.  To obtain this qualification he would be required to have had several years experience as a watch-keeping officer of a ship, hold a foreign-going Master Mariners Certificate (or Naval Certificate of service) and be under 35 at the date of appointment.  This may explain why he was 40 at the time of his marriage.

He died prior to his son, William Pain, returning to Deal from New Zealand on his first whaling ship voyage.  Son William's descendants ended up in New Zealand.

- Sue

Hi, I have been researching my Brown connections here in New Zealand and have quite a lot on William Paine Brown son of William Pain & Judith Brown.
I am now wanting to research my Williams siblings especially Stephen Pain Brown who emigrated to NZ with 1st wife Elizabeth then returned to England & married his 4th wife, and died 1896 in England.
I would love any information on any of their other siblings as well. Edmund in Sacremento, USA. Judith USA
We have just had a very successful reunion for William P Brown here in NZ and had a descendant of Stephen P Brown visit for the day.
Stephen was a Customs Officer in the Mongonui, Northland area & here in Auckland.

I am on the trail of Stephen Pain Brown's second wife, Susannah Miller…. as I am writing a book about colonial businesswomen in New Zealand. Any help gratefully received - and happy to exchange info.
