John Bath of this parish, shipwright and Ann Julia Wills, spinster of this parish were married by banns on 25 June 1816.

Both signed their name.

Wits - John Wills & ? Lodges or Codges

Looking at both images I can see some similarities in the signature of John Bath, however it's not exactly the same  ???

These BATHS are connected to my line. John BATH bapt 30 Jun 1779 Ottery St Mary married Catherine Holberton: Parish Registers, Stoke Damerel, 27 Sep 1802.
"John Bath, hairdresser
Groom's parish: Stoke Damerel
Catherine Holberton, spinster
Bride's Parish: Stoke Damerel
Witnesses: John BATH & Wm ROBERTS
Parish: Stoke Damerel County:DevonPage:178."
Catherine died in 1803.
He then married:
MF520 - Stoke Damerel:
John Bath of this parish, Hairdresser & Ann Willis of this parish, spinster were married by banns this Eighteenth day of July 1803.
[John Bath signs, Ann Willis leaves her X]
Witnesses: John Bath senior and William Roberts [possibly the churchwarden, appears on all marriages on this page]."
They had 7 children, including my 2 great grandmother Elizabeth Reeves BATH.
Ann Willis BATH then died and was buried 21 July 1832.
John, ever the groom, then married again to a woman some 30 years younger:
 "Stoke Damerel 1 Feb 1836.
"John Bath is described as widower of this parish, steward RN. Mary Ann Lidstone was a spinster of this parish. They were married by banns. The witnesses were Thomas and Elizabeth Churchill. John was the only one who signed his name; the others made their marks."
He lived to a remarkable (for the time) age and had a further 4 children:

Hi JJen & DOB7,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

JJen, many thanks for the marriage details, much appreciated.

DOB7, Many thanks for all that info, fantastic! So John Bath married 3 times! Good grief! My friend's late wife descended from John Bath & his 3rd wife Mary Ann Lidstone's youngest child, Harriet Sarah Faith Bath (to give her, her full name!)

My thanks to you both again.

Kind regards

David

Hello DavidJP,

You are very welcome. John BATH certainly led a colourful life. I assume your friend's family were HARRIS or descendents of? If you need any further information, please ask.

Hi DOB7,

They certainly are descended via the Harris's yes. Am currently looking at John Bath's RN Service record,  he seems to have been several types of steward as far as I tell!

1861:
Piece 1564 Enum District 2, Folio 28 Schedule 117
Trefusis Street, Parish of Mylor
John BATH Head  82 Parish Clerk b. Exeter, Sol--om

Just looking at my trusty road atlas, could this be 'Sowton' do you think? Its just East of Exeter, just off the A30 coming towards Exeter.

I am slightly confused as to the Ottery St Mary Baptism, as Census returns give place of birth as Exeter (although I am aware that as the crow flies, they are about 11 miles apart). I spotted a baptism at Exeter St Lawrence of a John Bath to father John Bath on 10th Jan 1781. Is it a case of too many John Bath's & I've got the wrong one? I should add also that my geographical knowledge of Devon is not at all good! ::) So that doesn't help! ;D

Kind regards

David
