Thanks I had looked at that other family.

Are you saying that at the time of Edward and Mary Ann Gravat's marriage (1856) that Edward who was married to Mary is 64 and a widow?

I have Mary dying age 66 in Farncombe St John the Evangelist in 1860.

I should have added that on the 1856 marriage at Farncombe Mary Ann Gravat is listed as a widow age 63 with father Samuel Turville.   It does look like the couple Jo found in 1851 and possibly Mary Ann is the death you found at Farncombe in 1860

My response to both of you in brackets after each section.  I put them in in colour but it removes the colour.  Of course the whole thing could be up the pole, it wouldn't be the first time.  Regards Bronwen

I wonder if this was your Edward in 1861?   Living at London Road, Godalming, Guildford
Elizabeth    Cheston    Head    Married 35    1826 Godalming, Surrey
Edward Rushbridge Lodger    Widower    68    Labourer    Wonersh, Surrey
William Cox Lodger    34    1827    Labourer    Godalming, Surrey
(Could be – right age -  his wife died the year before)

1851 Mead RowGodalming (HO107/1594/F?)
Edward Risbridge, 65, Un, Head, Woodman, b. Godalming
Margaret Gr?ess, 44, lodger, un, b. Silbourne.
(His wife was still alive for the 1851 census.)

I should have added that on the 1856 marriage at Farncombe Mary Ann Gravat is listed as a widow age 63 with father Samuel Turville.
It does look like the couple Jo found in 1851 and possibly Mary Ann is the death you found at Farncombe in 1860

(A 29 year old man, marries a 63 year old widow?  Is that very likely?

Bronwen, the 1851 census address of Mead Row Godalming is the same address you gave for Edward and Mary in 1841.

Are you sure that his wife Mary died after 1851?
Are you sure the Edward and Mary in the 1841 are the right Edward and Mary?

Bronwen - Sorry that I was unclear about the 1856 marriage at Farncombe.   I attach a small extract of the marriage cert (we can't post the whole document) with Edward Risbridger listed a widower of 64 and Mary Ann Gravat listed as a widow of 63 and both were living at Meadrow.

As Jo said the 1841 census for Edward and his original wife Mary shows them as Meadrow - the same address as the 1851  and1861 census we posted.  I think that the original wife Mary quite possibly died pre 1851 and in 1856 Edward (Snr) marrried Mary Ann (his lodger in 1851) who died in 1860 in Francombe.  Doesn't help that both wives were named Mary  or that he had a son Edward :)
