John Samuel Rudkin (1901-1979)
« on: Tuesday 28 August 18 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi there.

My great-grandfather was John Samuel Rudkin (born in 1901 and died in 1979). He was born in the village of Harringworth in Northamptonshire and died somewhere in the Stamford district in October 1979.

I am trying to locate his grave - but understand that he could have been cremated and not have a grave. I'm also trying really hard to find an obituary, too.

He was my grandmother's father, and he seems to have divorced my great-grandmother Florence Rudkin (née Villette) a short time after my grandmother Kathleen Rudkin was born in 1926. My great-grandmother re-married in 1936 to a Frederick Muggleton.

My great-grandfather did not die in Harringworth - and given that he died in the so-called "Stamford district", I would say that he either died some place in either south Lincolnshire or Rutland. I don't think any of the north Northamptonshire villages came under/come under Stamford district, but instead come under Uppingham district.

Any help locating where my great-grandfather John Samuel Rudkin died and where he might be laid to rest would be greatly appreciated.

Feel like I've hit a brick wall.

Many thanks.  :)

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

The death certificate would tell you where he died, though would not contain details of cremation or burial.

Hello, thanks so much for your reply.

How would I go about obtaining the death certificate? I imagine there will be a charge for this (but I don't mind)?

My grandmother did not know her father - she never even met him once. I think he and my great-grandmother separated when my grandmother was still just a baby.

You can order the death certificate from the GRO Online for £9.25 including postage:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Registration is required, but is free so you only pay per certificate ordered.  Don’t use “middleman” sites to order certificates as they will impose a hefty premium for what is a straightforward process.

You seem already to have found the reference details, but they are available from various sites including www.freebmd.org.uk.  You will need those in order to complete the online form.

Will this tell me the exact place he died, as opposed to just giving me a general "district"? (which I already know was the "Stamford" district).

It will tell you among other things the exact location of death, and the cause of death, and the identity of the informant (who may be unrelated, but this info can be helpful if it discloses a relationship you didn’t know about).

Oh, very interesting. I've just registered on the GRO website and will make an attempt at ordering his death certificate.

Thanks so very much for your help :)

NB according to UKBMD the only place in Stamford registration district in the 1970s was Stamford itself:

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/stamford.html (scroll down to Table 1B)

But you should in any event get more detail as to the exact address of the death via the certificate.
