Trying to find Location of Coedrardd Farm, Maesgwin, Nantmel
« on: Wednesday 29 August 18 00:27 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with this request? I am trying to track down the location of a farm listed as my 3rd Great Grandfather's address. His name was David Rice , born 1771 no date of his death. His occupation is listed as 'farmer' so I am assuming he owned the farm? The address I am trying to find listed as his and his family's address on the census is Coedrardd Farm, Maesgwin, Nantmel, Radnorshire, Wales.
I would appreciate any guidance.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Could it be this Coed yr Ardd at postcode LD6 5NR(?),by Cefn Coed at the bottom of this map?

In the 1841 census the property is close to Ffos(Y)Mascel as it is here.

It looks like it Roger. I missed it as Genuki told me that Maesgwyn was the area near Llyn Gwyn.

Thank you Roger & Gadget. As Coed-yr-ardd on the map is close to Rhayader and Maes-gwyn on the map is nowhere near Nantmel (but close to Beili-neuadd) I am wondering why the address of Coedrardd Farm would have Nantmel in it? I am using Google Earth trying to find the exact location as my wife and I intend travelling to the UK next year (I am in NZ) and I would love to find this location to visit. I have a few other family locations such as Llanyre so more research to do but I am confused over this one ???
Thanks again

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Nantmel like this:

NANTMEL, a parish and a sub-district in Rhayader district, Radnor. The parish lies on the river Dulas, under Camllo hill, 4 miles E S E of Rhayader r. station; contains the townships of Gwastedin, Maesgwyn, Coedglasson, and Vainor; and has a post-office under Rhayader. Acres, 16, 387.

As further confirmation of the location, I looked at the adjacent farm names on the 1851. They are:

Ffos-mascel
Beili-bedw
Llwyn-cwta
Llwyn-Gwilym

All are close by Coed yr ardd on the map links that we've given.

Thank you for that Gadget, I have been able to pinpoint the farm on Google Earth. Unfortunately it is down a private road with a locked gate so I can't see the buildings in 'Street View' mode but some are clearly visible from above. Somewhere to visit on our trip. :)
