Thomas CARLINE, born c1845, Glasgow
« on: Thursday 30 August 18 20:59 BST (UK) »
Hello,

When Thomas CARLINE was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Carlisle, Cumberland, on 03/07/1860 he stated that "......he had been several times convicted of theft in Scotland and served two years in Perth Prison".    I can find no reference to those instances or anything else about him, except possibly the 1851 Scotland Census: Gorbals, ED9A, p.18, Roll:CSSCT_1851_164, father and mother, Peter and Mary.

He was released from Parkhurst Prison on 02/07/1862.

Can anyone help with details about his life please??

Thank You,

BAC3

There are a number of Thomas Carlin/Clarline on the 1851 census in Scotland, quite a few were born in Ireland but if you check the RC records on Scotland’s People you may find the correct one, I suspect the one you mention below may have been to young to have been in Perth Prison prior to 1860, he was 8 in 1851, noted as 6 on the census.

THOMAS CARLIN son of PETER CARLIN/MARY MCCORMIC
born 18/8/1843   baptised 23/8/1843    St Andrew's, Glasgow, Lanarkshire

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank You Colin,

I forgot to mention that in his convict records he states he was born in Glasgow......sorry!!

I have no problem with his being in prison at a very early age as the harshness of Victorian justice made this possible.   His Perth reference could have been at age 12,13 or 14, all equally feasible.

Thomas, son of Peter (Patrick as variant) and Mary, is in the Glasgow area for 1861. Is the Thomas Carline you are looking for showing at Parkhust Prison for 1861?

From 1861, at the same address as the family show in 1851:

Patrick Carlin 50 b. Ireland
Mary Carlin 52 b. Ireland
Hannah Carlin 22
Thomas Carlin 18 b. Glasgow
Patrick Carlin 20
Mary Carlin 15

Address: 10 Clyde Terrace, Glasgow Gorbals

Thank you for your posts.

I think he has been successfully disqualified from being the 1851 Census entry!!   I had not realized "CARLINE" is such a popular name which makes my quest just slightly more difficult.
