"Opposite on the corner of Birchgrove Road was the house where Richard Lougher, the village Blacksmith lived.  He and his wife walked to St. Mary’s Church every Sunday morning always wearing black, and Mr. Lougher in a top hat".........................

"On the other side stood the Three Elms public house, the name of which was taken from three elm trees which stood outside Ararat church wall.  Between the Three Elms and the Whitchurch brook, the Blacksmith’s shop of Mr. Lougher stood, at the side of which was an opening to the brook in which was an iron plate used to fit the iron bands on cart wheels as required".................
