Scottish migration to England, USA etc in the 1700s.
« on: Saturday 01 September 18 15:21 BST (UK) »
Lots of Scots moved to the UK, America, Australia and others in the 1800s during census era. But also many did move out of Scotland in the 1700s. I did hear there was issues with farming in the 1700s in Scotland which made many of them leave Scotland. Lowland Clearances 1760-1830 etc and Highland clearances.

I know my ancestor John Stewart moved to County Durham in about 1750-1770. Not sure of the exact date but he was born in Selkirk, Scotland in 1738, and died in 1815 in Bishop Auckland in CO Durham in 1815. He had children later in life and luckily the PR's gave his place of origin.

I have noticed many Scottish surnames in Co Durham and Northumberland and some in Yorkshire in the 1700s. And of course I have come across Scottish sounding names in families in London such as Archibald Stewart in the mid 1700s in London.

There was probably a good wave of Irish migration to England before the Great Famine.

People go from where they are to somewhere else based on whether there are work opportunities in the new place. I would say that the Scottish migrants were the most successful anywhere they went.

The UK is heading for the broth-pot!  ;D

Many Scots stayed in North America after serving in the army & receiving land grants. The end of the 18th century also saw Scots serving in England & forgetting the road home!

Skoosh.

The recipe for me contains ingredients from all 4 countries which were part of UK. Mostly potatoes. Some (possibly Belted Galloway) beef, neeps, a bit of Welsh lamb, a lot of English Lamb, simmered in English ale. Basically I'm a Lancashire Hotpot  Second course is Crumbly Lancashire cheese on oatcakes made from oats grown in Lancashire. If there's an ethnicity question on next census I think I'll put "Lancashire Hotpot".  ;D

So those Scottish soldiers didn't take the high road or the low road?

I have an ancestor (Scottish) who went to India with the HEIC in the 1700s, he also spent time in Afghanistan.  His wife was with him in India. When they returned to the UK they settled in London.  Within my tree most of those whom I have found leaving Scotland were in the 1800s.
