Did he have brothers Bernard and Patrick living Green Lanes Drogheda 1904?  That one served 1904-1915 in the Leinster Regiment.  (Not the same one as the MPSC man, this one was discharged "unlikely to become an efficient soldier (probably medical)).

My apologies - the James Bannon with the brothers at Green Lanes which looks like the one found by Ladyhawk, served only from Dec 1904 to Feb 1905 (not 1915).  He was discharged as not likely to make an efficient soldier (that is sometimes a medical problem).  Adds up with his 1909 occupation being a civilian employment.
Whether he was the same James Bannon who went to war to Egypt with the MPSC (in Nov 1914), became a Warrant Officer and was still serving in 1920 at the detention barracks in Dublin - don't know, his record has not survived.  Could the service dates fit, was there a family story about Egypt and he was an army prison warder?  I'd say unlikely as men recruited to the MPSC were usually serving experienced soldiers already.
