Attorney's writing clerk
« on: Saturday 01 September 18 16:53 BST (UK) »
John Harding was articled to Thomas Wyndham Jones, an attorney and was admitted as an attorney in 1826, but in 1851 he is listed as "an attorney's writing clerk", when living with his brother-in-law, Thomas Wyndham Jones, in Nantwich. The latter description would suggest somebody not actually qualified, which puzzles me. Has he come down in the world and been employed as a clerk? I'd appreciate suggestions

Am I looking at the wrong 1851 entry:

HO107/2170 folio 150 page 3

Thomas Wyndham Jones - 55 - born City of London - Attorney at Law - visitor to Ann Corbett in Beeston, Cheshire

 :-\

Oops - should be looking for John Harding  :-[  :'(

I think this is the one we want:-

Registration district   Nantwich
Archive reference   HO107
Piece number   2169
Folio   576
Page   26

Living at Hospital Street, Nantwich, Cheshire - Ann E Jones is the head and a widow - occupation is described as Attorney's wife.

Suggests that Thomas died somewhere between 1841 and 1851.

FindMyPast have put John's occupation as an Attorneys Wainting Clerk!  Image says writing.

Side tracking somewhat but this is Thomas's marriage:-

On 4 February 1842 at Wybunbury to Anne Eliza Siddall.

That wouldn't suggest that John is Thomas's brother in law unless Anne had been married before.

On second thoughts - I think that 1851 census record you found is right BumbleB.

Thomas is listed as married, Attorney at home.  Underneath is an Edward Jones Attorney's Managing Clerk.

I can see what has happened.  Ann is not a widow she is married.  There is a line through the word Mar on the image which makes it look as though it is a W.

I have a solicitor's clerk on a census in Manchester who was previously in partnership in another town. I think there was a business failure. His elder spinster sister singled him out in her will, leaving him a fixed sum, which made me wonder if it was because she thought he was in particular need of cash. Rest of her estate was to be shared between her 8  other siblings.

I found an interesting item in a publication (google books) entitled "The Law Times, a Journal, Advocate and Advertiser, Sat Apr 8 1843"** - page 132.

Google it and it should return a searchable version. "writing clerk" in Go should deliver, amongst others, page 132.

** - sorry I can't post the URL

Donches,
Just twigged "Thomas Wyndham Jones".
If you still have a sub to FindMyPast try checking for "Attorney's writing clerk" in newspapers.
From what I've seen they didn't have a very good press.
