Hillock(s)/Hillick(s) research - is it possible researching pre 1808?
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 05:08 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm researching the Hillick/Hillock family and have gotten a lot of help in these forums before so was hoping to try again. In my research I have one James Hillock who was born approx. 1808 in Co. Armagh, I gleaned this from a Scottish death certificate and was wondering if it is possible to research Irish ancestors before this date?

The family was Catholic and moved to Scotland around 1856. James' parents were called James and Ann. On the death certificate James was listed as a farmer, no maiden name present for Ann.

His wife, called Helen/Ellen/Eleanor Keating was born approx 1807 most likely in Co. Armagh again. Her parents were listed a Michael O'Kittins (farmer) and Helen, again no maiden name given.

They were married in Derrynoose on 20 April 1829.

So my main question for this is whether or not it is possible to find out more about their families in the 18th-early 19th century.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You could look at the Irishgenealogy hub website and consult the Tithe Records of 1827 approx for Armagh. You should be able to see where there were Hillocks/Hillicks, particularly a James.
Its probably not useful but there were definitely people of that name in the Armagh Parish Catholic records which start 1796 or a bit earlier. You would need a Rootsireland subscription or take the time to search  the Armagh Catholic records online at www.nli.ie. It is time consuming and the microfilm isn't always legible but it is free! Though your Hillocks were in Derrynoose they might have originated nearer Armagh City.

Here's the link to Armagh Catholic Parish registers (transcriptions can be full of errors so usually best to go throught the originals)- https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0184
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub’s listing for each parish
The relevant original books are in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast. the information is a one liner describing their quality of land. it normally only refera to the tenant. It is a biased record.
