James Golding Herbert 1795-1874 Sudbury
« on: Monday 03 September 18 02:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish who James Golding Herbert's parents were. He seems to have used either James or Golding as his name.
Birth records: James, son of Rev. Daniel Herbert and wife Elizabeth Lambert, born 1798, probably died as there is a second James in 1800.
Census records for Golding Herbert, 1841, 1851, etc, give his birth in Sudbury as around 1795 and these match information from his son Thomas Philip Herbert who emigrated to Australia aged 18. Thomas's marriage record gave his father's name as Golding, mother Elizabeth Rayner, father's occupation as innkeeper. I cannot find a birth record nearer 1795 and parish records are incomplete.
Marriage record for Elizabeth Rayner 1821 lists groom as James so he used both names. I cannot find the original record.
There are so many Golding Herberts in this area that I don't know how to work out who his parents were. If the Rev. Daniel is his father, the dates don't match and I am surprised such a strict Methodist who set up his own church, had a son who was a publican.
I have looked in quite a few places for records and have reached a dead end. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks.

I have his death as 13 Oct 1871 and the will settled 12 Mar 1872. It lists his widow as Elizabeth and one of the executors is a butcher as he was at this time. I may not be correct however.
Thank you for the suggestion which I will check out.

Think you need to find someone to go to the Suffolk Record Office, Bury St Edmunds Branch to look at the "Bures St. Mary Parish Records" to find that 1821 marriage

I think you are right as it is possible the groom's father could be named at James Golding Herbert's marriage. Unfortunately I am researching online from Melbourne, Australia and I haven't found any CDs etc of the appropriate parish records for Bures St Mary available.  Another option I have considered are obituaries for the Rev. Daniel Herbert who was well-known. I haven't seen any yet which name all his children as they are more interested in his hymn-writing, but possibly his death certificate may give these if I could see a copy.
Thanks for your suggestion which could clear up the mystery.

I do have a list of the Rev. Daniel's children of course with "James" twice, 1798 and 1800.  I just wonder if any details of their lives at his death would help clear up if my James Golding Herbert is one of them.

There MAY be something on the website Bures-online.co.uk, but that site seems to be down at the moment ::)

My family (Garrad) were all from Bures St Mary ;D

There is (or was?!) a forum on that site that also may be helpful?

Thanks so much for your really helpful suggestion of the Bures website.  It seems to be up and it looks like an excellent source which I had no idea existed. I'll look out for the forum too.
