Wilding
« on: Tuesday 04 September 18 04:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for a maiden name for Sarah Wilding born 1788. I believe she married John Wilding at some point but have been unable to find a marriage. She shows up on the 1841 census living at Court Plocks, Allensmore, Hereford and Dore. Living with who I believe are her sons Joseph, James, Thomas, George and Peter. born 1811,1821,1824, 1827 and 1831 respectively. I cannot find their births registered either (is there a date when births started being registered) I have however found all their baptisms, but Sarah's maiden name has been left blank.
Any help getting her maiden name and any information on her marriage to John gratefully received, assuming they did get married of course. The family have always resided in Hereford as far as I can tell. Thank you in advance - Richard.

"Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths, in England and Wales, started on 1 July 1837"

So you wouldn't find those sons registered but you will find the baptisms.

This 1837 marriage could have been their daughter?

I wasn't aware there was a daughter but entirely plausible. However there are a few John Wildings knocking around Hereford.

Yes, I've come across their baptisms but mothers surname is missing,.

It isn't missing, as in "it is normal practice for it to be there but has been missed off"

Only very very very rarely did a vicar include the mothers maiden name on a baptism register, it was not normal practice.  What you have found is what one would expect.

So you need to be looking for marriages for a John Wilding to a Sarah someone. Probably prior to 1811, though we dont know exactly when the first child of the marriage was born, Joseph may not have been the eldest.

Marriages were traditionally in the brides home parish, thogh often the couple would then settle where the groom lived because of his work.  So you would need to start with Hereford  itself and then work outwards to neighbouring parishes.

Did she survive until 1851? If so you might get a more accurate place of birth for her to see if she started life as a local girl, or only came to the Hereford area later.

Pre 1837 research can be lengthy and thnigs need confirming from as many angles as possible because it isnt always abundantly clear if you have found the right one, so you could also look at Wills for example.

A possible hint to Sarah’s maiden name - do any of the names of her children contain a middle name which could be a last name? E.g. John Smith Jones.
I also note that there is a 10 year gap in the first to second born. Is it possible that she was married before?
If you know the occupation of Sarah’s husband then you could trawl through the local Parish Register Marriages to identify him and also rule out other John Wildings.

Kath, it appears she had daughters, which will fill the gaps.
