Hello Janette,   The items of interest were found on Archway online index to N.Z. Govt. archives
                       record series 8333, for Johnstone/Johnson Brothers c.1840-1982.

They are Colonial Secretary's inward correspondence from Russell, Bay of Islands
1844.  The records I would like to read are attached below with details of the record.

Regards,
Jen.

Thanks Jen,

I was trying to ascertain which Archives office holds the files

Cheers Janette

Thanks Mckha for your advice re Archives look-up and also your link to J. Brothers' replacement,
much appreciated.

Have also noted on the NZ BMD website -  that Births, Deaths and Marriages were originally part
of the Colonial Secretary's Office.  Do you know if any of these records would have survived and if
so where to find them? ???

Regards,
Jen.

Hello Jen

For your information. The largest collection of old records is held by our [NZ] national archives, spread over several branches, in our main centers and at Wellington. The catalogue listing for them can be found by using the online ARCHWAY address as exampled above in a couple of links.

If you would like a resident RC member to look them up for you, it is important to know which branch of the archives they are held. So the above request was to see if they were held at either Auckland or Wellington; the most likely ones for historic Bay of Islands records. Of that period others can be found in Australian archives until the hand over.

A separate [new post] WELLINGTON or AUCKLAND Archives LOOK UP request, might get the likes of myself or spades offering to have a look see when next passing the archive.

You also have the possibility of local museums, and churches OR their NZ headquarters and archives holding historic records, not held in the National Archives system.

Alan.

Hi Jen,

No need to start a separate thread, I have PMed Spades to hop on board, will be easier for him to follow the thread, so he knows what he is searching for at Archives.

Cheers

Hello Alan and KHP,  I am overwhelmed with the generosity of NZ Rchatters and your willingness
to help me negotiate the labyrinth of NZ records ;D Received some great
                           help yesterday as well.

Thanks Alan for your info. re the old records collection in NZ archives
and suggestions for other possible sources.  Have sent an email to the museum
in Russell and hope to locate a Historical Society - someone may be able to
                           enlighten me re Church records.

KHP I greatly appreciate your help with the archive material and the PM to
Spades ;D  It is so much more than I expected :D

Thanks to all
Jen.

Another archive that you can look up on line, is the Alexander Turnbull library which holds copies of all NZ publications [books & bulletins] and many other items. It is the Government's library.

But I'm not famaliar with any search options, to eliminate references to all the newspapers hits I have directly obtained from Papers Past. Today I found some 1860's correspondence, and a school publication reference, that I had not found in my usual go to places.
