Armstrong C? - shell factory circa 1914
« on: Tuesday 04 September 18 21:02 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can identify this company/factory that existed circa 1914.

I'm researching a WW1 soldier who said he was employed as a 'shell inspector' for Armstrong C??.  He lived at the time in West Bridgford.

There was the Armstrong Whitworth company in the Tynside area making munitions at this time. They merged with Vickers around 1927. However, it's a long way from West Bridgford.  :-\

I found two possible factories in the Nottingham area:

Royal Ordnance Factory (renamed National Ordnance Factory) - built 1915 in the Nottingham Area by Cammell Laird which produced shells.

National Shell Factory, Spring Close Works, Old Lenton - a former textile mill taken over by the Nottingham Munitions Committee

(no connection that I know of with Armstrong)

Nice find.

No 6 NFF Chilwell, Long Eaton - the page I linked doesn't show the operator but wiki says the boss was Viscount Chetwynd.

It's looking as though Armstrong C?? was not the owner or company, but maybe was a site manager.
