Dark lane
« on: Wednesday 05 September 18 00:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me where in the city Dark lane would have been. I am on the trail of my gr grandparents, and have discovered that their first child was registered with the address Dark lane, this was in 1868. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards Daisy

From the Londonderry Sentinel of 25 November 1954: Dark Lane, Londonderry is to be re-named "Joyce Street" as from the start of next year, following a memorial from residents of Dark Lane seeking such an alteration which came before a meeting of Londonderry Corporation Planning and Housing Committee on Tuesday.

There is the following reference (P221 in the link below): Dark Lane 1750: Barrack Street/Hogg's Folly. It may have had high thick hedges in the eighteenth century.  Name changed to Joyce Street c. 1952.  Demolished by 1972 to make way for the flyover.

Struggling to find a good online map showing it, though I can see it on a paper map that I have and can confirm that it was just under 100 yards due south of St Columba's Church, on a modern map the middle of Dark Lane lay approximately at the intersection of Windmill Terrace and Saint Columba's Walk, running nearly in line with B507 Barrack Street:

Edited to add:  I see it listed in Griffith's Valuation (just search for it at the link below) - at the time of typing, the map feature wouldn't work for me so I can't say if it is shown or not, hopefully it will work when you try it:

Alternatively, the resolution isn't great below, but you can see it towards the bottom of the following map, look at the area just west/southwest of Albert Market...

Thank you everyone for your help, all fascinating reading if your family originated from Derry. I have been on the Irish genealogy site, and after years of searching have now found the addresses where most of the children were  born.
The big breakthrough is that in Dec 1885 the family where living at Waterloo St, in attendance was a Mary CAMPBELL, giving the address as Waterloo St, who I believe was the mother in law. My next question is how do I find out who was living at that time in Waterloo St.
Thank you so much for all of your help it is very much appreciated.

Regards Daisy

Like gaffy I also have a paper map but can't find a good online map for Dark Lane area. Detailed 1905 map here but very hard to read-
http://www.billmacafee.com/derryancestors/derry/derrymaps/1905mapderrycity1.htm

The song The Town I Loved So Well made famous by Phil Coulter mentions Dark Lae in the first verse-

In my memory, I will always see
The town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the old gas-yard wall
And we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane
Past the jail and down behind the fountain
Those were happy days in so many, many ways
In the town I loved so well
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
