Bishops transcripts - which is the correct church please .
« on: Wednesday 05 September 18 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I'm doing some research for a friend and have taken relevant entries from a BT from 1769 right up to the end of them.
When I told the person they were taken from St Mary's Gateshead, they said won't it be St Mary's Heworth . So I went back to the BT's and to  Genuki and now I'm doubting myself.

I found the correct images by clicking on the BTs for Durham then Gateshead and it says on the first page St Mary's. So are these images St Mary's  church near the Tyne Bridge which is what I thought they were.
My understanding is that Jarrow was with Heworth until 1834 when Heworth separated and therefore any entries for Jarrow St Mary's would come under THAT heading in the BT'S, where its a separate entry .
The ones that are correct to the family are from the Gateshead entry and not the Jarrow one!
Thanks

To check, I'd use the catalogue search on Family Search

1 Search: Catalogue: enter Gateshead as the place name.
That will Change the entry to England, Durham, Gateshead
Click on that, then Church Records in the list that comes up
Now Select England, Durham, Gateshead, St Mary's Church, Bishops Transcripts
Ignore the link that directs you to the general list for BTs
and click on the camera icon at the end of the entry for the relevant time period.
If you find the burial in there, its Gateshead St Mary

2 Rinse and repeat the above with Heworth as the place name
again ignore the link that points you to the general list for Bts and look for the camera icon beside the relevant time frame.
If the burial you want is NOT in there, you have cross checked and can be sure its Gateshead

Or vice- versa depending on what you find.

Another cross check (I like belt n braces) would be to do a free search on Durham Records online and see what that says, or Free Reg to see if its in there.

Sorry if that's long winded, but it should help to be more sure.

Thanks Boo.
I'll try that lot. I've been trawling through the Jarrow St Mary and they are def not on there plus they didn't live in the area covered by that parish. I like your belt and braces approach!
