Boer War Casualties
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 07:04 BST (UK) »
I am writing a book on the casualties from King's School Worcester of both world wars and the boer war. Can anyone give me any information about the following Boer War casualties, especially where they are buried/commemorated?

Trooper Edwin Herbert HARRINGTON and Trooper James Eaton ROAN both of
16th company 5th battalion Imperial Yeomanry

Civilian Linesman Frederic Harold CLAXTON Imperial military railways

Welcome to Rootschat Mark. I see that this post has been duplicated somehow but I'm sure the moderators will sort that out.

I've had a dig around for information on Frederick Harold Claxton. He was born in Tenbury in 1880 and was the son of the Reverend William Claxton who at the time  of the Boer War was vicar of Navestock, Romford, Essex.

F H Claxton was an electrical engineer. He had already served in South Africa in 1900 as a sapper with the Royal Engineers (clasps for Orange Free State, Transvaal, and Cape Colony) before being discharged at his own request in November 1900.

As you will know F H Claxton died of disease at Bloemfontein either on 31 December 1901 or 9 January 1902 (sources differ).

There is a plaque in his memory at Navestock church https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidrobarts/8104364562/in/album-72157631809313355/

You should read the detailed obituaries of the old schoolfriends Harrington and Roan in the Worcester Journal of 27 October 1900, page 5 and the Worcestershire Chronicle of 27 October 1900, page 8.

Mark

A specific message to "ladysmith" as I suggested referring to the book I cited may save you receiving info I know you have already!  The Anglo Boer War web site refers to the book in each case.
