From marriage banns to marriage certificate
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 09:28 BST (UK) »
Please can you tell me how to get the index no. I need for my 3 X grandparents marriage certificate.

I have found the marriage banns for David Evans and Grace Davies but they are for the parish church in Llangeler, Grace is from Penboyr. I would have thought they would have married in Penboyr, Carmarthenshire. The date is 1815.
I cannot find their marriage on freereg but it's on Ancestry and FindMyPast.
   Thanks

There will not be a certificate;  civil registration did not start until July 1837.

Registration didn't start until July 1837, so I am afraid all you can do is search the Parish Records of the Church in which you think they may have married.

There may be two parishes involved, the parish of the bride may be different to the parish of the groom. Banns have to be read in both parishes but the wedding is usually in the parish of the bride.

If you look for the Abel Lewis couple on the banns above your one then you can get to the correct parish register for their marriage, all those other couples marriages seem to be there but not yours.

The Banns were valid for three months so the marriage could have taken place between the 19 April and 18 July. At that time it would be rare for the marriage entry  to show more than if they were widowed or single, and the names of the witnesses, it won't indicate any relationship.

Thanks everyone. I did look up Abel Lewis and following pages up to Nov no luck.
These are the records for Llangeler and I need to look at the Penboyr records as well, off to post on Carmarthenshire board to see if anyone there knows where to find these online , but I can see a road trip to Aberystwyth in the near future😀
