Murray family in Yarrow.
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 21:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish the wider family of John Murray and Christian Scott. I am following a son named James Born approx. 1785 who married a Mary Scott in 1806 approx.

I would be interested to know if I'm correct in my research regarding a brother Walter but would love to know if there are other siblings.

I also have some information that the family may have been Dissenters and would also like to know if this family are Philiphaugh Murrays or not!

Birth 27 June 1784
(Familysearch.Org)

Although I cant find a James c 1785 to them.

Only Marriage to a Mary Scott I can find is 15 Aug 1803, Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian

Do you have James on 1851 Census to confirm his dob/pob?

Thankyou trish1120!

Yes this is the Marriage; the Censuses indicate a birth year of 1785 but Birth difficult to find. Am assuming because John and Christian were Dissenters.

I would be much happier if I could find siblings to Walter and James!

Wow Timeisshort!

Thank you for this research.

Do you think these are the same Murray?

Where did you find the Militia lists for Yarrow?

Very curious and grateful!

Yvonne (researching for my Mother Margaret Murray).

There were a lot of Murrays in the Yarrow Valley at that time, but hes the only one who appears as James. It may, for all I know, be two different James's.

The actual Militia Lists are down at the Hawick Hub, I don't know if they are online.

You can search there records here

http://www.calmview.eu/Hubcat/CalmView/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=CH2

They're quite useful as they list all men from 18 to 45 in the area (also lists stuff like if they were deaf etc).

The 1811 one had a section for under 30 or above 30 (slightly confusing if they were actually 30)
That section was sometimes not checked - as in James Murrays case.

The Howford Mill James Murray is who was referred to here

You may also want to look at James Murray, a stocking maker in Selkirk, who married Betty Hislope  and had a child Isoble born 29 March 1791. The minister came from Midholme. There may be a link between the two (probably not, but it's an avenue to go down)

Have a read through Reminicences of Yarrow by James Russell , as  the Murrays are mentioned a few times  (its available free on https://archive.org/details/reminiscencesya01russgoog)

Hawick Hub has lots of Parish and other records that aren't online, with a wealth of information, if you have the time to trawl through them page by page to ensure you don't miss anything.

(a James Murray was also minister at Yarrow between 1680 and 1690)
