Henry James' birth certificate states his birth as 11 Jun 1858 at 30, Sutherland Street, Hulme. He was baptised in Manchester Cathedral 31 Jul 1859. The son of John Wild (Overlooker in Cotton Mill) and Ellen Wild formally Moorcroft.

The Manchester Rate Books 1706-1900 show the family still living at the Hulme address until 1864. The 1871 census shows his WIDOW and son living at 18, South Wilton Place, Ordsall, Salford.

Hi Marj,

Thanks for the info. I have come across 8d 69 before and it did seem promising.

Two years ago I went to Salford Registry Office with the relevant details only to be told the only result was for a 58 year old joiner. I got the feeling they thought I was a nuisance.

It is possible he may have died whilst still living at Hulme. Ancestry search brings approx. 12 possibles. How to narrow them down? It would be too expensive to buy numerous certificates.

Hulme is in the Manchester Registration District
