Raynors and Ansett Update
« on: Monday 10 September 18 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone able to check for the following marriage and christening for me:

Marriage of Robert Rayner and Margaret c1638-1643 possibly in the Charing area. Robert was born in 1619 and their first child Anne was christened in February 1640/41 in Charing.

Christening of Elizabeth Ansett c1589 possibly in Charing. Elizabeth married John Rayner in Charing in 1609 and may have been born in that parish or nearby.

Thanks for any ideas

Matt

Thanks Claire

Is this from the PRs or BTs?

Is there any indication of where Margaret was from?

At least I can put that on my list of notes for the Rayners.

Thanks again

Hi

No PR’s or BT’s online for Charing on FindMyPast, just transcriptions. And no other info in the record.

I’ve looked for a baptism for Elizabeth Ansett and can find none at all, nothing for Ansett or variant. The closest I can see is in Mersham ( 9 miles from Charing) in 1581 and that’s for an Elizabeth Ansell daughter of Rychard.

I’ll keep a look out.

Just had another look - it does say both resident in Charing. In terms of geography there is a Margaret Smithson baptism in Shadoxhurst (10 miles from Charing) on 11 Jan 1618 dau of William Jnr.

Hi Claire

Thanks for that and the info on Elizabeth Ansett/Ansell. Elizabeth Ansell could definitely be the same person as Elizabeth Ansett especially given that I only have the details from an online transcript.

I'll check up on both of these as they sound like good leads.

I had a look into the Ansells in Mersham this afternoon and I've now found another possible candidate for Elizabeth Ansell.

There is an Elizabeth Ansell, daughter of Simon, christened in Wye on 15 November 1583.

Wye is about 6 miles from Mersham which means it is closer than Mersham.

It would be useful if I could establish if one of these two Elizabeths died or married elsewhere (or in their own parish).

More investigation needed.

Hi Claire

Found some more information on the Smithsons in Shadoxhurst.

I've discovered two Wills for William Smithson, obviously one senior and one junior. The first is from 1625 and the second is from 1632.

The second one is probably William Smithson junior.

What puzzles me is that there is no mention of Margaret in the Will. The only people named are his son William, his brother Roger, and his wife Rose.

It looks like William married Rose Fox in 1612 at Canterbury St Mary Bredin.

The problem is that their son William was christened on 26 September 1618 which is only 2 moths before Margaret's christening.

Do you think these two could be twins or are we looking at two different Williams?

I haven't seen a burial for Margaret Smithson so I am assuming she didn't die.

I suppose she could be the daughter of either William but it is puzzling.

Hi Matt

I’ve done a fair bit of looking into the Smithson family too. The wife of one William Smithson that died in 1625 - Rose, went on to marry a George Epps in Shadoxhurst 1628.

But, I’m afraid I’ve probably wasted both of our times

Margaret Smithson dau of William Jnr. buried 21 ? 1618 Shadoxhurst.

Other Margaret’s I’ve just spotted

Margaret dau of John Smythson baptised 12 Sept 1612 in Wye.

And I’m not positive there looks to be one in Sandwich but I think that’s possibly too far away.

John Smithson of Wye - two possible marriages both in Wye

J Smithson and Bennet Jones a widow married 11 Sept 1598

J Smithson and Margaret Note married 20 April 1601 - this looks good  :)
