Electoral Role Lookup please - late 1940's (post war) >>>
« on: Monday 10 September 18 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hi all, new territories for me here so be gentle!

My gt gt grandfather, Nicholas Francis Whitty, committed bigamy during WW2. The only possible match in the UK GRO could be him

Jun 1945 - May E Wratten - Folkestone 2a 4001

This is the only other marriage I can see that could possibly be him. I've only found one death with his name, and there is only one death for a May Whitty (1979 Blackpool) - no death for a May Wratten (that I can see).

Is anyone able to look at the electoral roles in the area for 1944 on at all? Thank you in advance. I don't have a lot of info at this time

Electoral Rolls are listed by address - so you need to know an address.

They are also kept by local/county administrations. E.G. Libraries and Record Offices.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Ah ok. I wasn't sure if there were any online indexes available in the Kent area. Will bite the bullet on the marriage cert to get an address

In your signature you have the Whitty name connected with Wales - are you sure that the Kent marriage is relevant?  There are records of two men named Nicholas F Whitty, one born 11.04.1902 who died in Shepway district, Kent in 1988, and the other born 25.03.1906 who died in Glamorganshire (Ogwr) in 1978.  A 1955 marriage in Bridgend may or may not relate to the latter man.

I can't easily see birth registrations for either of them ???

Also you may find that electoral rolls were in abeyance in 1944 due to the war.

Thank you for that - I've no idea how I managed to miss those deaths! In work and getting distracted. That definitely crosses this one off the list.

Thanks again
