Henry Hickling, Born Duffield 1833-1837
« on: Monday 10 September 18 20:00 BST (UK) »
Henry Hickling is my gg grandfather and on his marriage certificate his fathers name was Charles ???. It looks something like Key, Ley or Wey but I am struggling to decipher it and find his birth record for his correct surname and his mothers name.

Henry was born in Duffield about 1833-1837.
He is on the 1851 census, living in Duffield aged 15.
He married Hannah Webster in Allestree in 1858 aged 23.
They lived in Codnor where they had 3 children.
Henry died in 1867 aged 34.

I hope someone might have some information which could help me find out more about Henry.
Many thanks

Have you had a look for him in the 1841 census?

If you can attach an excerpt from the marriage certificate just showing the part you are having trouble with people can have a look for you  :)

Can you show us the bit of the marriage certificate that has Charles' name?  You don't need to attach the whole certificate, unless you want to.

We can then have a look and see what we think Charles' surname is.

How did Henry acquire the surname of Hickling?
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire

Thank you, I will try to get an extract from the certificate and attach it.  I don't know how he acquired the name Hickling though

I can see a copy of the marriage online and can see your problem  :-\

Definitely says Charles as his father but no occupation given just a line.  Surname looks like Vig as there is a big dot in the middle like over an i.

Step father perhaps.

I did wonder if he could of been illegitimate but without finding his mothers name I am a bit stuck.

Yes it's a tricky one for sure.

I don't know the area but there are a couple of 5 year old Henry Hickling families in 1841 to follow up.

One in St Peter Nottinghamshire with Ebenezer 45 and Ann 40 as possible parents

One in Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire with John 40 and Martha 34 as possible parents

Long shot but it could be one of those gentleman died and their widow married a Charles whatever his name is and you could trace him that way but Henry would still have had an original father to name so :-\
