John Lovell 1720 - 1781
« on: Wednesday 12 September 18 21:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find out if my Lovell, Kings and Lees are Romany.

I have John Lovell 1720 to 1781 married to Mary King ant 1720 to 1799.

Mary's parents are William and Thamar. John's are William Lovell and Mary Jane Merrion.

Later descendants seem to have occupations of Agricultural Labourer, Caster and Caster Boy.

Many thanks
B

Need more than that to go on really, B.

What makes ye think they may be?
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

Hi

My knowledge on this isn't very good, so apologies if this is way out.

I have names grandfathers in my tree with names like Levi Lovell, Moses Blanchard, Kezia Lovell, King, Lee, Metherell and maybe more. Just from looking online I understand these could be Romany names?

They are all based around Hampshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

It's hard to make out some of their occupations on the census. Agricultural Labourer is one that I can make out though.

Got my attention! I'd hope that of a few people more, too. Only, I'm rusty as an old nail, now. And I'm not on anywhere of much use to man or beast either.

But those are some good names. The area is of interest to me too. I even happen to have a King, stitched onto my lot. Long wondered how that name got chosen ~ because chosen it was. Neither parent was a King.

I'd  hope, now that the Dog has well and truly been shown the rabbit, some of these people, on here, who can just bang up lists of information by the minute, may take notice.

Though, I'd say ye Really need to provide some starting  points and pose some actual questions for them. They're excellent. But, they're not mind readers.

Census entries ye having difficulty with? We have a board, Right Here where the code breakers live. They'll sort it for ye. Please do read Berlin Bob's sticky: " ** Using this Board / Completed Topics ** ".

Hope this thread kicks off for ye, B. I for one will be looking on with interest  :)

I think you mean "Coster" and "Coster Boy" - they sold vegetables at market
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)
