What you get when you right click a file depends on which version of Windows you have, AND which Office products are on the computer.  You would not get that red "Microsoft Ofifce" icon unless you had a recent MS Office installed which is not the case here.

On my old XP computer for example, I right click an Excel file and choose "Open With ..." then select "Choose program", then you get a list which includes Excel, and will include Libre Office if you've installed that, and importantly also tick the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" as well as the program you want.

Thank you everyone.

I have decided to go to a library and see if they can help.
It was beginning to get too difficult and I really prefer chasing ancestors to delving within a computer's workings.

Apache 'Open Office' is another good substitute for the M.S. Office stuff and will deal with xlsx and docx files no bother.....

Hello Palladium,

I am quite speechless. Within minutes of reading your message I had downloaded Apache Open Office.
And fortunately I had remembered Hallmark's instructions of how to change the application used to open a file.

Something I have worried about for weeks has been solved in 10 minutes - and I am not exaggerating.

So THANK YOU Palladium and Hallmark, and everyone else who had suggestions for me.

One very happy
