Capt. Thomas Crawford RFA
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 11:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information for the above. I know he was the Paymaster for the Palestine Railways in the early 1920s, not sure what this means though. He was married to Lilian Howlett and had 3 children Michael, Thomas and Imelda. I believe he was taught music by one of the Strauss family and would be interested to learn about his military career.

The RFA is a branch of the Royal Navy but it is manned by civilians. Not sure that you'll find him in military records.

The Fleet Air Arm museum holds crew books for Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary. "These contain alphabetical indexes of ships, crew lists, rates of pay, and next of kin."

Thomas Crawford married Lilian B Howlett in Richmond, Yorkshire, in 1917.

Imelda Crawford was born in 1921 and her birth was registered with HM Consul in Palestine. Neither Michael's not Thomas' birth was registered in Palestine as far as I can see.

I suggest getting a copy of the marriage certificate and seeing what it tells you.

He appears in the 1919 Navy List as Fleet Reserve Skipper (temporary), seniority date 18 July 1917. He has W.F.S. 209 after his name - possibly his ship? - EDIT -  that's his service number as a Warrant Fishery Skipper.

I should of course have written that the birth of Imelda Crawford was registered in Palestine in 1921.
