William Killips, b 1836 Co. Down
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 12:41 BST (UK) »
I am chasing a family that emigrated to Canada.

William Killips was in Vaughan Township, Ontario on both the 1861 and 1871 censuses.
In 1871 he is stated as 35 years old (so born c1836). married to Eliza, and born Ireland.
In 1861 he is with his parents, William & Jane Killips and a brother, Robert. William aged 25, so again born c1836. All are said to be born in Ireland.

He married Ann Eliza Burns, in Canada, in 1862.
The marriage entry states he was born in County Down.

A note in a Family Bible says the younger William emigrated to America on 22nd August 1854 - presumably at the same time as his parents and brother?

He died in Vaughan Township in 1878, aged 40.

As for Religious Denomination:
1861 census says Presbyterian.
1861 Marriage was in a Methodist church.
1871 census says Presbyterian.

Not being too familiar with Co. Down records, can anyone find a baptism, or marriage of his parents?

There's also a William Killip in Cleveland, Ohio! Born c1833, but he's not my man!

It would appear that here, in the Isle of Man, the surname is Killip; in Ulster it tends to be Killips ::)

Nothing obvious on your grouping, but a few Killips/Killops to check at:

I did a search for graveyards etc and there is Killips in Inch and Holywood graveyards

This is one in Holywood
"Sacred to the memory of John Killips of Ballydavy who died 4th July 1861 aged 80 years Also his son Hugh Killips who died 13th March 1872 aged 50 years Also Margaret Killips, wife of the above John Killips, who died 29th May 1875 aged 89 years Also his grandson John Killips, son of William Killips, who died 15th September 1878 aged 25 years Also Tabitha BAIN, wife of William Killips, who died 17th December 1897 aged 74 years Also her mother Amelia Bain who died July 1870 aged 67 years Also the above named William Killips who died last day of January 1899 aged 87 years Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer to Thee"

And one in Inch
Killips year of God 1837, Samuel Killips in memory of his [unfinished] Killips

There is still a number of Killips in the census in Inch in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1901&surname=Killips&exact=&firstname=&county19011911=&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&townland=&ded=&age=&sex=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=&birthplace=&nativeCountry=&language=&deafdumb=&houseNumber=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumberDiv=&protNumber=&parish=&barony=&yearsMarried=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familyId=&ageInMonths=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=100

In 1823 there is a Samuel Killops in Ballyrenan, Inch on the Tithe books.

In Ballydavey in Holywood in the Griffith valuation there is a Hugh and a William Killips listed (this was compiled around 1860)

I would start of my ensuring you have exhausted all the Canadian records as to search in Ireland, you generally need an area much smaller than a county - but its a good start!
McClean, Kelly, Murray, Higgins, McAnulty (McNulty, Conalty, Kinolty), Morgan, Rafferty, McPolin (All Co Down, Ireland) Bowman, Hooper(Yorkshire)

Is this possibly William's parents?

If yes, I wonder where the 'Wiley' was gleaned from, as it doesn't appear on the headstone. Perhaps it was her maiden surname and noted on a record somewhere in Canada.

As your William has a brother Robert, as mentioned in your first post, see:

Quote
.    Robert Killips was born circa 1841, at birth place, to William Killips and Jane Killips (born Wiley).
William was born circa 1798, in Ireland.
Jane was born in 1789, in Scotland.
Robert had 2 siblings: William Killips and one other sibling.
Robert passed away.
