Stanley Houses, Hoxton before the 1960's
« on: Friday 14 September 18 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Was wondering whether anyone could point me to the existence of any photographs of Stanley Houses, Hoxton, which according to Booth in his description of them in 1898 were five-storied (sic).  I believe they were demolished in the 1960's.  Or any descriptions of them from people who lived there, was wondering too whether they might have been damaged by bombs in WW2...
Many thanks,
Keith
Can't quite make out on Booth's map of Hoxton and Shoreditch what colour he had used for them - black being used for the most impoverished communities.  Would the Wellcome Museum be a good source of info?

Keith, although not what you are asking for, I find that looking at households in the census can give you an idea what the area and conditions were like. You can look at the number of residents per household, occupations of neighbouring houses etc.

What street was Stanley Houses in?

Thanks, Ruskie,
I see already that the family I was looking at were crammed into just two rooms there.  Plus Booth describes Stanley Houses as "rather rough".  Not sure whether he was rudely referring to the architecture or, more probably, the inhabitants hanging about outside...
Keith...
...crossed posts in the ether there, Nanny Jan, I'll have a good look at those links you so kindly sent me.  Many thanks...K

I think Stanley Houses was on Mundy Street:

(unfortunately not marked on that map though)

...and now I'm getting sidetracked by those quarter of a million lovely images, Nanny Jan, looking up other locations in London that have a family association in the past, and it's all your fault!
Keith
But thanks for keeping me more focused, Ruskie...that's a very impressive before and after representation.  Many thanks!
Keith

Gosh, that's an impressive find.  What a shame, too, that Stanley Houses are not marked on Mundy Street, on that map.  If they were built five storeys high, perhaps they were once quite grand houses. I know very little about the development of this area of London, I'm afraid...

The street is not black - it looks more pale blue and grey (though the legend doesn't say what grey means):
