Captain Rawleigh MANSEL died 1796
« on: Friday 14 September 18 17:01 BST (UK) »
Dear Friends

I am seeking information on above person. He was Captain in 63rd Regiment, and 'of Swansea', and died at the island of St Vincent. His parents believed to be Rawleigh and Martha (Nee SHEWEN) Mansel of Swansea. His sister believed to be Mary who married Germain LAVIE circa 1794

The Mansels are a well known clan but I cannot find out how this little branch connects to the main stem. Can anyone help me please?

Thank you so much.

Thanks Osprey. tha's really kind.

Sadly I don't have a date of birth or age at death for Rawleigh. However his sister Mary was born 1763. Is there an entry for Mary's birth at Swansea I wonder?

Really grateful to you

Yes, I gave you the details of Mary's baptism in 1770.

There's a PCC will for Rawleigh Mansel otherwise Dawkin from 1784 mentioning wife Martha, eldest son Rawleigh, son William, daughters Anne & Mary.
From the 'otherwise Dawkin', he looks to be related to the family of this complicated will

NLW have the marriage bond for Germaine Lavie and Mary Mansel dated 17 Jan 1794, marriage was 18 Jan in St Mary's.

Various editoins of the  Monmouthshire Merlin,    23rd April 1831 report the death at her house in the Burrowes, Swansea, of Mrs. Martha Mansel, the relict of Rawleigh Dawkin Mansel, in her 85th year.

In March 1891 the Cardiff Times published an item on the Parliamentary History of Pembroke, listing MPs. I realise the dates are wrong for your Rawleigh, but working on the assumption names run in such families this may give a clue? Unfortunately I can;t locate Abercover

1722, December. William Owen, vice General Ferrers, deceased. He has be6n previously treated of as member for the county, 1747-61. Re-elected for the borough 1727, 1734-, 1741 (when Rawleigh Mansel, of Abercover, Carmarthenshire, presented a. petition, which the House dismissed February, 1742), and 1747. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire and of the liberty of Haverfordwest.

Perhaps this will amuse - some one was researching this line in 1892!

Putting Abercover in various searches(NLW,Welsh Newspapers,Census) it seems possible it is a property or area of Llandyfaelog. There is a will of 1674 for Rawleigh Mansell at this address and subsequent (?) ones in Carmarthenshire in 1722 and 1750,the latter with spelling "Mansel",at NLW

Roger

Mansel Mansel aka Dawkin's will refers to him being the 5th son of William Dawkin, late of Kilvrough, and his wife Mary who was the daughter of the Rawleigh Mansel, late of Pembrey and by the terms of Rawleigh Mansel's will written 2 June 1720 they would change their surname to Mansel. The 3rd son of William & Mary, another Rawleigh, had been the one to inherit, but Mansel now in possession.
Mansel's will also mentions his son with his wife Mary named Mansel Dawkin Mansel who is to inherit as he is the lawful son as he has been cohabiting with Anne Hudson and her children won't inherit.

This is the will written in 1720, proved 1722

there's a monumental inscription for Rawleigh Dawkin Mansel died 1784 ( father of the captain) in St Mary's Pennard, which gives a date of birth of 1746.
