A marriage in 1922 in Paddington
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 00:07 BST (UK) »
Between a Tom Priestley and Hannah b Kenealy but can't find a birth for Hannah.  I am wondering if her surname is mis spelt as I have seen it written as Whenaly. They got married in Paddington in 1922.  Any suggestions please?

Welcome to rootschat Sarah.

Do you have the marriage certificate? With a bit of luck this should tell you her father's name and her age which might give a starting point to look for her birth. (It may, on the other hand, give her age as "full" (21 or over) and if she happened to be illegitimate, there may be no father named.

Have you checked the 1939 register for Hannah? I believe that gives date of birth if it was at least 100 years ago.

Added: Where did you see her surname as Whenaly? It sounds like a transcription error, but there will be variations of Kenealy I imagine. It sounds like an Irish surname.  :)

They look promising Sue.

It might be worth buying that marriage certificate as well, which will take you back another generation.

I think her birth date was 17th September 1902

sparrett
has found her.

In 1939 the family were in Ealing:
Tom born 29 Jun 1902
Hannah B born 17 Sep 1902
Thomas born 12 Jan 1925
(one closed record)
Mary born 1927
Emeline KENEALY born 1899

There is a KENEALY family living next door

Thank you all for your replies, I think you've found her. What a great site this is.  Just one last question, if I could be so cheeky, was Thomas Priestley born Jan 1925 born in Paddington or Yorkshire?

The 1939 Register doesn't show birthplaces.  We'll have a look at FreeBMD to see what births there are.

ADDED - it looks like all the children were born in Barnsley.
Birth Mar qtr 1925 Barnsley vol 9c p540 PRIESTLEY Thomas mmn WHENALY (looks like a dodgy transcription!)
