Mystery in Canterbury 1851 plus
« on: Monday 17 September 18 16:11 BST (UK) »
In 1847 Elizabeth Jane HITCHCOCK gave birth to Edward Whitman HITCHCOCK father unknown.

In the 1851 census she is living in Canterbury with her parents Henry and Sibley  HITCHCOCK along with son Edward. At that time she is using her middle name of Jane.

Then she disappears into thin air. I cannot find a marriage, death or a shipping record for her.

I have tried using Elizabeth and Jane, also just the name of Jane or Elizabeth.

So if anyone likes a challenge to a mystery I would love them to help with this. Have been searching on and off for fifteen years with this one.

What I do know is that Edward the son married and moved to Deal in the mid 1890s and changed his family surname to WHITMAN (From his middle name)

Any help with this greatly received.

There's a death in the March quarter of 1861 (Canterbury district) of JANE HITCHCOCK.

Age given is 32 of Northgate, Canterbury.  Buried on the 3rd March.

Could this be her?

Thank you Redtonyt,

I forgot to say in my main message that she was born in 1827, which would make her 34, but we all know what happens with ages over the years.

I will send off for the cert tomorrow and see what it brings back. I will update.

Thank you

The burial of Jane was at Canterbury St Gregory.

Henry Hitchcock was buried on 17th August 1862, also at St Gregory, age 74 of Northgate.

Thank you lovely people, certificate ordered.

If this is my Jane, which I am pretty sure it is, it will fill a huge hole for me.

Thank you.

Would it be possible to see if the mother Sibley Bradley HITCHCOCK was also buried at St Gregory please David?

Her death is recorded in the June Qtr of 1876.

I presume you have considered that he might have been given the name Whitman becuase it was the "father unknown" 's surname?
