William Walsh and Bridget Gallagher living Irish Green Drumachose, Limavady
« on: Thursday 20 September 18 10:38 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to locate the details for the above William Walsh and Bridget nee Gallagher.
I know they were living in Irish Green, Drumachose, Limavady as there was an extract for the 1851 census made as a request from their son William.
I have also discovered a baptism of a daughter, Bridget in 1860 at Limavady naming both parents.
My interest comes from their supposed daughter Catherine who gives her parents names as the above William Walsh and Bridget Gallagher of Derry at the time of her 2nd and 3rd marriages in Australia. She emigrated to New Zealand circa 1878 and was married to Thomas West (ancestor) in 1880 in Chrstchurch before they moved to Victoria, Australia.
I would like to find her baptism (her age varies giving a date of birth as between 1855 and 1858) to confirm her parents are correct. Any other siblings would be a bonus as would the marriage of her supposed parents.
A brick wall I am afraid. Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you looked through the rest of the register?
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0363
It starts 1855

Is this the Bridget you found? June 26 right hand page.
I wonder if that's Ward not Walsh

Could be a faint l there, it would be good to see a second example.

Hi Sinann
Thanks for your reply. Yes that is the baptism of Bridget but I still think the name is Walsh.

I searched through the rest of the register but no other records for William and Bridget although there are a few other Walsh entries.
The date of birth range for Catherine may be even wider and this register starts in December 1855.
I did wonder if the other children were baptised in neighbouring parishes but I have no knowledge of the area sadly.

Any information would be gratefully received.

You can use the map to find and check the surrounding parishes.

The address given on the pension claim form is Irish Green Street in [Newton]Limavady which is in the civil parish of Drumachose. The street is still there.
http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=40755
Children listed are Susanna (13 in 1851), Mary (9), Eliz (6), Wm (4), James (2).
This scan seems easier to read than the one you've posted-

Wonder if this be William? possible marriage (1869) which should be available online by the end of this year-

William living in Scotland when son David was born- informant was a Bridget Welsh-

David married 1912-

This Bridget Welsh probably related-

Thanks for your reply.
You mentioned that the form was a pension claim form. Thanks I didn't know this.
I believe the applicant was the son William who was 4 in 1851 and that the marriage on 26th July 1869 was his to Annie McLaughlin.
The  census returns would also be theirs.
Wow I have just read the bit you posted regarding David's birth and this confirms the family as she was McLaughlin. Thanks I missed that record. So William moved to Scotland.
You mentioned more records are coming online this year.?
Thanks again Val

Glad that I'm on the right track  ;)

Pension age was originally 70 and since those 70 and over were born before the civil registration of births (thus no birth certificates) the 1851 and 1841 census returns (deposited in Dublin) were used as a method of verifying eligibility.
It wasn't uncommon for people to apply for pension and a search of records failing to turn them up.

Will post a bit more in a while  :)

Michael Walsh (I'm sticking to this spelling for convenience although Welsh is just as commonly used) was a chimney sweep. Possible death for his father William in 1888 in Limavady Workhouse-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1888/06171/4763821.pdf
Can't see death for Bridget (either before or after 1888) but perhaps she died before 1864 or outside the area.

William Walsh & wife Annie McLaughlin had 11 children but only 5 living according to 1911 census.
Son John married Sophia McCrudden - some of their children:
