William Hembling 1853 Union Workhouse, Shipmeadow.
« on: Saturday 22 September 18 03:19 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on William Hembling born1853 Union Workhouse, Shipmeadow, illegitimate son of Susannah Hembling and stepson of William King. He has 2 known siblings, Georganna 1849 and Richard 1851 both illegitimate and born in Union Workhouse, Shipmeadow. Their mother Susannah later married William King.
Last positive siting of William Hembling is 1871 census Bungay, Suffolk, living with William and Susan King and his step siblings and then he dissapears.
Family stories say he went to India and arrived  in 1872 may of had 2 marriages, first to Grace D Royle around 1877 where they are both registered as widowed and maybe she died in 1892. The second marriage to Alice Constance Martin. As I said these are mainly stories and if he was widowed in 1872 he must of had a previous wife maybe in England. Any help appreciated.

Hi Solidrock,

Is there any more info on the 2 supposed marriages - such as where, etc?

I can find this:

Grace Deborah ROYLE
Born 7 May 1847
Christened:  29 Oct 1863, Bangalore, Madras, India
Father: James ROYLE
Mother: Annie Augusta

But nothing more  :'(

Cheers

Hi Ambly,
Thanks for that it looks possible for one wife. William had his first child by Alice Constance Martin in 1895. Grace died in 1892. Grace apparently had 3 sons from her first marriage. Thats about all I know about the India connection. Thanks again.

Hi
There is a marriage for Grace Deborah Royale in 1866 but you need to buy the certificate ,it is only an index.

William Burchett died at Meean Maer Bengal age 29 17 Mar 1876 Corp in Royal Artillery. Abcess of liver.

Grace Deborah Burchett widow age 28 daughter of James (B)oyal remarried 24 Mar 1877 at Rawal Pindi to Henry Walter King widower age 26 son of Walter King Bombardier RHA

I can't see any children for them or a death for Henry Walter King.

The death for Grace in 1892 is as King 16 March 1892 Calcutta wife of William King age 46 phlegminsia

If he used King as a surname then perhaps these are his children with Alice Constance
Leonard Ferdinand 7.4.1895/10 June Lucknow Christ Church to Harry William King and Constance Alice  Guard O and R railway
Vincent Valentine 4/18 Aug 1896 at Lucknow
Sidney Martin King 8.7.1902/17.12.1902 Allahabad All Saints to Harry William King and Alice Constance King Guard E J railway

Alice Constance died at J 19.3.1915 age 40 enteric fever wife of W.H King guard on EJ railway.

A possible earlier child
Nigel Henry King-Salter  s of Henry Peter King and Alice Constance Dinapore St Luke 21.6.1888 Leut 4 bat Rifle Brigade.

There is also a attestation for a William/W.H.  King of Bungay age 19 joining up 30 May 1871 at Norwich farm labourer. So that may explain how he got over there.
5ft 6 3/4 in scar behind left ear dark eyes and sandy hair 1 year Norfolk militia
Transferred R Ha  7.9.1883
He was in India from at least 18.10.1872-there is a list of his medical complaints -syphilis,gonorrhea,boils and piles.
Only Grace listed as a wife .Discharged after 18 years 30 Nov 1890 at Lucknow.

Wow Ciderdrinker,
Thanks a lot for all that, it clarify's a lot and ties in with some info that I have. I have been told that he changed his name to King and also to Harry William King, no idea where the Harry came from. The problem is with Alice Constance Martin, when did she marry William, they had 8 children. Thanks again for you help.
