Redlands Maternity Hospital, Glasgow
« on: Saturday 22 September 18 17:15 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I believe this hospital was a private hospital and was closed down in 1977/1978, does anyone know what the fees were for this hospital? (Strange question, I know).

Also, was there a reason people would go here rather than a non-private hospital?

Thanks for any information  :)

Hi, and. welcome to Rootschat.

If you Google "Redlands Hospital, Glasgow" several sites will be displayed.
Istrice.

Perhaps a Mod. could move this to the Scotland, Lanarkshire site where the query may have more coverage.

My wife had a D&C there @ 1973.
Her sister was born there in 1954, brother in 1959.
It was part of a small section of Terrace housing on Great Western Road.
She wasn't charged in 1973 and doesn't believe her parents would have been earlier.
Terrace still there but not sure what "hospital" use is at present.

Administrative/Biographical History

Redlands Hospital for Women was founded in 1902 as the Glasgow Women’s Private Hospital, it was staffed entirely by women until 1955. Unlike the voluntary hospitals it charged modest fees for its services. In 1948 it was absorbed into the ambit of the Western Regional Health Board under which it functioned as a gynaecology and obstetrics unit, particularly for paying patients. Redlands was under the Board of Management for Glasgow Maternity and Women’s Hospitals from 1948 to 1974 and then in the Western District of the Greater Glasgow Health Board. The Hospital closed in 1978

Hi there

Redlands Maternity Hospital was very much an NHS hospital in the sixties and seventies.  My mother worked there as a midwife and my sister was born there in 1968.  However, due to its rather posh west end location, many of the NHS obstetricians who took wealthy private patients would house them in Redlands rather than in the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital that Redlands was closely associated with from about 1974 until 1978.

Redlands location was really lovely with private gardens and nice views from ward windows.  My sisters and I spent many an hour waiting outside the hospital in my dad's car for my mum to come off duty.  In "the old days" with no mobile phones, if she had a patient in late stage labour, she'd have to see it through to the birth even if it meant she was late finishing.

Hope that helps.
