Something I read here www.talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13627 -   I have a Matthew Montgomery at Bowhill in Fife, but the rest of mine are Airdrie, Cumbernauld, Lesmahagow, New Monklands. The Montgomerys are from my maternal grandmothers side, she was Helen Findlay Montgomery.

A Helen Findlay Montgomery/Cameron died in Dunoon aged 70 in 1969.

Added: A Helen Findlay Montgomery was born in Airdrie in 1899.

As everyone has mentioned, you need to check the 1921 marriage cert online to let you confirm mother and father's names for Alexander and Helen. This lets you work back the lines with confidence, particularly with common names like Cameron.

Some guesses re Helen Findlay Montgomery for now. I think her parents may have been a Matthew Montgomery and Lucinda McVey who married in 1892. Matthew's parents look to have been a Matthew and mother Helen Findlay (likely source of the name, with the family following Scottish naming pattern). They look to have been a coal mining family at that time.

From SP (Scotlands People), there is a birth in Dunoon in 1921 indexed as:

CAMERON
LUCINDA MCV MON
1921
510/1 132
Dunoon

Looks like potentially some of the Montgomery family headed off to the US www.findagrave.com/memorial/79960588

Confirmation from marriage certs and regs will let you confirm details further.

That was kind of you to check, Annette  :)

A possible scenario may be that Alexander was illegitimate and gave his grandparents' names for his parents when he married?

There are these census entries as maybies:

1891:

Allan Cameron 60 gamekeeper b. Ardnamurchan, Argyllshire
Mary Cameron 47 b. Ardnamurchan, Argyllshire
Flora Cameron 22 daughter
J Hugh Cameron 6 son
Alexander Cameron 4 grandson b. Morven, Argyllshire

Address: Gamekeeper's House, Strontian, Ardnamurchan

1881:

Allan Cameron 56
Mary Cameron 37
Sanoy Cameron 17
Flora Cameron 14
James Cameron 12
John Cameron 7

Address: Keeper'S House, Sunart, Ardnamurchan

I can't see a birth in Morvern for an Alexander Cameron c. 1886-88, but there is one in 1887 in the district of Sunart/Strontian as a possibility. Added: not sure on possible birth. There is another Alexander b. Strontian c. 1887 showing in the 1901 census.

Alan Cameron's wife Mary also has the maiden name of Cameron (going by birth indexes on Family Search for their children). Ties up further with what you mention Annette from the marriage reg details for Alexander.

Important to find his birth to try to firm up which of the many Cameron children he belongs to  :-\

Maybe Alexander's death reg gave different details for his parent/s?

Hi Margaret, I am also a grandson of Alex Cameron (Papa) and have been working on my family tree. I have been struggling to trace his parents. Did you have any luck with your tree?
Best Regards
Robert Martin
