Identifying a 'Crest'
« on: Monday 24 September 18 18:34 BST (UK) »
Hello, first time here so feeling my way.

I have an old brass framed fire guard, which is in three parts and folds up.  The centre, largest, part has a 'Crest' bolted to the front of it.  It comprises of a wreath (?) made of leaves (Laurel?) with what could be a quiver of arrows on top of the wreath going top right to bottom left and a Torch over that going top left to bottom right.  Is it just ornamentation or of some significance?  It may have been bolted on after it was made. I do have a photo.

Hello Peter, Welcome to Rootschat.

Looks interesting doesn't it.  Where did you get the fireguard from?  Did you inherit it or buy it?

I would agree with the laurel wreath, quiver of arrows and torch.  It may just be ornamentation but it is certainly different isn't it.

Have you tried googling images to see if anything like it appears at all?

Interesting. I found this online which is similar:

https://www.lolofrenchantiques.com/french-louis-xvi-style-carved-giltwood-mirror.html

"The intricately carved crest is formed by the twin symbols of Louis XVI - a quiver of arrows crossed with a flambeau - joined by a laurel wreath and bow tied ribbon."

If you put - crest with laurel wreath, torch and quiver of arrows - into Google images it comes up with a few pictures.  Slight variations but pretty much what you have.

It keeps mentioning French so it may have been something that relates to that country.

Louis XVI keeps popping up as well in relation to the symbol.

Perhaps other rootschatters may have their ideas as well.

Many thanks for the replies.  I've just bought the rather old fireguard from someone on Facebook. The images you found look virtually the same but the fire guard is probably mid century because of the 'rubber' feet.

Thanks again
