what is the attached all about
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 08:46 BST (UK) »
I was browsing the Parish records for Barrow Upon Soar Baptisms & Burials for the period of 1728-1812   and in the first few pages are statements as per the attached.

I am wondering what they are about?

In relation the attached there is also mention of names such as Wd PHIPPS.  Does this mean widow?

It was a Charity in the name of Theophilius Cave.
See: http://www.busca.org.uk/heritage/articles/village-history/local-history/barrow-upon-soar-1846.html
(Paragraph headed "Barrow Hospitals")

Bishop Beveridge's Charity is mentioned further down.

Thanks so very much and what fascinating reading.

is it correct to assume the peoples names under the various headings are those who were recipients under the charities?

And lastly does the Wd relate to Widow?

I'd say 'wd' means widow. In the link supplied by KGarrad, it stipulates the recipients were to be "poor widowers or bachelors". It sounds to me more like what we would call 'alms houses' these days. I believe they were often called 'hospitals'.
I love the fact they had to wear a uniform of sorts.
A good job they had these altruistic people like Theophilus Cave and Bishop Beveridge  to look after the old and infirm of the community. :)

As it says 'Cave's payments' in various places, I'd think the names were recipients of the charity.

Interesting especially as on rereading it seems the money was for "...widowers or bachelors.." so the male and perhaps not the female??
