Machine winder

Hi,

Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of information on the following occupation: machine winder in steelworks (1901 Census in Jarrow, Durham, England).
Crawford - Inverary, Scotland;
Senn - Germany;
Perrin, Page, Arney, Morcombe, Arney - South Australia;
Morcombe, Yelland - Devon/Cornwall, England;
Arney, Axford - Wiltshire, England;
Allen, Coulter - Ireland;
Wagstaff, Griffith - England;

Are you sure it is not Machine Minder ?

Have looked at an American census list of occupations and steel machine winder is listed. Dependant on the steel company, I would think he either worked a machine winding steel wire onto bobbins or more probably on a machine that made steel coils.

You could be right, the first letter has a very fat line through it, so I thought it was a 'W', but it could quite easily be a 'M'.

I will investigate the area around Jarrow, Durham further which may give me a clear answer. I think you are likely correct about the 'Minder' word.
